Khmer people hold peace praying ritual

Khmer ethnic people in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang are eagerly organising the Bun Kom San Sroc (peace praying) festival.

This is an annual event that often takes place in dry season from the first to the third month of the lunar calendar.

Visiting East Asia with one visa

Tourists will soon be able surf in Bali, shop in Singapore and eat spicy street food in Thailand before crossing into Cambodia and cruising the Mekong in Vietnam with a single tourist visa.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is working on a plan that would open the region to foreign tourists in the same way Europe's unified visa system has streamlined travel.

A new eco-tourism park within the Bac Lieu Bird Nature Reserve has opened in the southernmost city of Bac Lieu to the delight of a growing numbers of tourists.

Located just 4km from the city centre, the 130ha reserve is home to around 100,000 birds of more than 100 different species. Nine species living in the reserve have been listed in the Red Book including giang sen (painted stork), coc de (great cormorant), seu dau do (red-headed crane), co co ngan (short-necked stork) and others.

Mekong Delta to become global economic zone

The Mekong Delta is expected to become a major agricultural production region in the global network, a dynamic and sustainable economic zone, and a great centre for culture, history and tourism by 2050.

The Ministry of Construction and the Can Tho People’s Committee have made public the Prime Minister’s decision on the Zoning Plan for Development of the Mekong Delta until 2020 with a vision for 2050.

A Mui Ne surfing school owner plans to ride hundreds of kilometers down the Mekong River on a stand-up paddle board to raise awareness about plastic bag pollution in Asia’s waterways and oceans.

Australian surfer and kitesurfer, Rob Kidnie, said he was planning to do the epic paddle anyway, but decided - why not use it to help make Vietnam’s waterways and beaches cleaner for watersports.

The Mekong Delta Economic Co-operation-Ca Mau 2011 Forum later this year would focus on building better connections between provinces and cities in the region, organisers said at a HCM City press conference on Thursday.

The annual MDEC forum would start with a conference in HCM City in July, followed by four seminars in Ca Mau in October.
