World-recognised Stone Plateau attracted large number of tourists
The World-recognised Dong Van Stone Plateau in the northern province of Ha Giang attracted 4,000 domestic and foreign tourists over Tet, earning VND3 billion (US$150,000).
Sen Chin Ly, a provincial official, said various sporting and cultural activities and traditional festivals had been held to attract tourists.
Vietnam’s northernmost point
Standing on top of Dragon Mountain in the northernmost Ha Giang Province is the Lung Cu flag tower, flying the Vietnamese flag, delineating the border between Vietnam and China.
Ly Thuong Kiet, a king in the 11th century, built the first tower to declare the nation’s sovereignty from neighboring China. The tower was rebuilt under the French and has been restored many times since. Twenty nine meters high, it has six relief patterns of the Dong Son drum on the base. The national flag is a massive 54 square meters in area, representing the 54 ethnicities of Vietnam.
Ha Giang receives UNESCO certification on Dong Van Plateau

Prehistoric traces discovered in Ha Giang
Traces of prehistoric people which belong to the Hoa Binh - Bac Son culture, dating back some 6,000-7,000 years, have been found at Khuoi Nang cave, Thuong Tan commune, Bac Me district in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang.
During an excavation early November, experts from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology and Ha Giang provincial museum discovered two ancient tombs. Bones and teeth found there reveal that the tombs buried an adult and a child with a layer of pieces of stone under their bodies.

Northern Vietnam highlands named UNESCO 'Geopark'
The Dong Van Stone Highlands in the northern province of Ha Giang have been recognized as a member of UNESCO-supported Global Geoparks Network (GNN).
The recognition was announced at biennial meeting held Sunday in Greece’s Lesvos of GGN, which promotes and preserves geoparks around the world.
