While collecting scrap irons from the Huong (Perfume) River in the central city of Hue on March 9, two fishermen found separate parts ancient dug-out canoes in the river-bed.

These items were discovered nearly Thao Long dam in Phu Vang district, Thua Thien – Hue province, in the downstream of the Huong River. They include two heads, 2.65 and 1.34m long and a body 2m long.

Researcher of Hue history and culture Ho Tan Phan said that perhaps these are parts of three dug-out canoes because the three parts don’t fit together.

“It is highly possible that these are ancient dug-out canoes of the people before the 14th century because the collected items are very different from the boat designs of Vietnamese in the early 14th century,” Phan said.

This is the second time ancient dug-out canoes were discovered in the Huong River. The last time a dug-out canoe was fished out in the upstream of the river.

The Huong River is a landmark in the ancient capital of Hue.
