Mekong Delta Vietnam in Vietnam Travel Destinations

 Location:

The Cai be floating market is held where the Tien Giang river forms the border between the provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Ben Tre

 Characteristics:

Approximately 400 to 500 boats filled with fruits, vegetables, and other products are anchored along the banks of the river, from 5 am to 5 pm every day.

My Tho - the city along the Tien River

Located to the North of the Mekong Delta, along the North of Tien River, Tien Giang Province shares border with Long An Province on the north, Dong Thap Province on the west, East Sea on the east, and Ben Tre Province on the south.

Tien and Vam Co Tay rivers with Soi Rap, Tieu, Dai river mouths make good condition to develop aquaculture. The terrain is divided into distinct three regions: fruit gardens along the bank of Tien River, plain and seaside.

Vinh Long: first place in Mekong Delta to experience the area's distinctive culture

For most travelers, Vinh Long is the first place in the Mekong Delta where it’s possible to gain a reasonable experience of the area’s distinctive culture.
Most head straight for a boat to cruise some of the Mekong's famous canals and channels. This is a pity, for the town itself is something of a backwater is thus worthy of attention by those wishing to escape the commercial side of tourism.

Can Tho: the Mekong Delta's 'capital city'

Apart from being the provincial city, Can Tho is also the unofficial ‘capital’ of the Mekong Delta.

It’s a vigorous modern place with some good hotels and restaurants, but not much else. However, it’s a useful centre for visiting the Cai Rang and Phung Hiep floating markets and cruising the labyrinth of the Mekong’s channels and canals.

Soc Trang: centre of an intensive rice-growing area in Mekong Delta

Soc Trang province is located in the Mekong River Delta region near the mouth of the Bassac River (Song Hau Giang). It is the centre of an intensive rice-growing area and a crossroad for road and canal traffic. It’s a poor area (as demonstrated by the scruffy condition of the provincial capital, Soc Trang town) with an estimated population of 59,000 just over 200km from Ho Chi Minh City. The road journey involves two ferry crossings.

The Mekong Delta: floating markets, fruit orchards and wildlife

The Mekong River travels over 3,000 miles on its way to the sea, where its journey terminates at Cuu Long, the famous Mekong Delta.

The name means ‘nine dragons’ – the nine mouths that wend their way across the 62,160km of canals, channels, silt islets and mangrove swamps that comprise the delta.
