Central Highland Vietnam in Vietnam Travel Destinations

Yok Don National park borders with  four communes in  Dak Lak province: Ea Bung and Chu M'Lanh communes- Ea Sup district, Krong Na commune- Buon Don district, and Ea Po commune, Cu Jut district. The park covers a flat plain that extends from eastern Cambodia into northern Dak Lak and southern Gia Lai provinces in Vietnam.

Daklak (Buon Ma Thuot) - the famous land of coffee

Buon Ma Thuot lies about 190 km inland from Nha Trang and around 200km north of Dalat. A large town in a coffee plantation area, it’s the provincial capital of DakLak province but its main interest for visitors are the natural surroundings and the thirty or so ethnic groups in the area. DakLak is warmer and more humid than Dalat, with a rainy season from April to November.

Pleiku - one of the main theatres of American war, and now is charming rebuilt town

The name Pleiku is usually associated with the American war as one of the main theatres of operations. It was a North Vietnam Army attack on Pleiku that prompted Lyndon Johnson to authorise the ‘Operation Rolling Thunder’, a campaign of sustained heavy bombing. It was also the site of the war’s first conventional battle.

At the southern extremity of the Central Highlands is the city of Dalat. Originally built by the French colonists, Dalat still bears a passing resemblance to a French town, an impression that is diminishing as Vietnamese-style buildings proliferate.

Dalat can be reached by air, now both from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

The Central Highlands of Vietnam

Much of the Central Highlands is a series of flat plateaux, mainly inhabited by various ethnic groups. Apart from Dalat, the tourist guide books are somewhat dismissive of the area. Many remarkable sights and attractions are not even mentioned, probably because they are too far off the regular tourist routes.

At present, this is a blessing for 365Travel's travellers because it provides an opportunity to visit one of Vietnam’s most fascinating areas without bumping into groups of tourists.

KonTum - Place of more than 600 ethnic minority villages and hamlets

The most northerly of the three towns on the Highland plateaux, the provincial capital of Kon Tum is located on the banks of the Dakbla River about 900km from Ho Chi Minh City and around 200km from Qui Nhon. It’s a pleasant, unassuming sort of place.
